I'm about to buy an new mac myself and had wondered about the new hardware issue. I had also wondered about the finance deal, but now I suspect that Apple would very much like people to keep buying macs NOW and not wait until Leopard is released.... It certainly seems like a better idea to wait and get your shiny new mac bundled with Leopard.Â

Has Apple EVER introduced new hardware at a developer’s convention? Why does everyone insist year after year that there will be new hardware at WWDC? It’s never happened the last 3 I’ve watched.. After all, developers aren’t but rarely impacted by hardware changes.. It’s all about the OS and development software!!

Sure the first Power Mac G5 and, indeed, the Mac Pro.

Peace,

New hardware will be here sooner or later, but consider if you want to move up to vista... pick one of the ver$ion$, then pick a new computer (the general impression is that the old hardware 'taint god enough) to run it on. Lots of $s involved there.

consider if you want to move up to leopard... one version, and it runs on all of the recently released Macs, I understand it is supposed to run on G4 based machines as well.

Bringing Coverflow into the finder will make work even easier for those folks that are visuallly oriented. When it (Coverflow) first came out for iTunes it was very easy on the eyes, certainly, but after using it for a while, it made finding music really easy and switching back to the other views was somehow irritating to use. Then Apple picked it up and made it officially part of iTunes and soon we will have it all over the OS. This is a lot more of a life-like approach to keeping and finding "things".

Safari for Windows is HUGE! What’s next, iPhoto? How about Keynote, that would be terrific. As someone who uses both platforms, the more applications I can duplicate the better. I have been standardized on Firefox for both platforms for a few years now but will soon move to Safari, my favorite browser.

So far the only significant difference I see from the Mac version is the addition of movable tabs (also added to the Mac version). Very nice.

I think this is being done very, very carefully, and not to remove the Mac difference. So I can see Safari and iTunes, but not iLife and iWork, nor Apple's professional multimedia applications.

Peace,
Gene

>>My personal view is that what works, works, and I don’t care how they do it. :)

Gene, I agree with this view when method XYZ does in fact work well, but if the present method is a bit slower than it needs to be, as in Apple's current Carbon Finder, than the means matter a bit to me. Yes, today's Finder is acceptably functional in an aesthetically pleasing fashion, but IMHO it could and should be more responsive (by which I mean faster).

Then again, if it were possible for Apple to accomplish this with clever and highly optimized Carbon programming, then, like you, I could include the current-day Finder in the "means needn't matter" category. :)

Seriously, I did feel a bit unsatisfied as there were no new hardware announcements. Perhaps they're still trying to clear out the stock of existing equipment?? Or was the recent speed bumps on the Mac books the new equipment? I miss the days that Steve would announce two or three new items at the same time. I mean there was even the teaser with the apple.com/store closing down during the keynote. :-(

I am curious if Apple, or any developer, has disclosed whether this is the finder rewrite that so many Mac users have been clamoring for–is it a ground up Cocoa programming implementation? Will it be appreciably snappier ( if so wOOt! ) ?

Not yet. But if that's the case, you'll hear about it before long. My personal view is that what works, works, and I don't care how they do it. :)
