Too secretive vis-a-vis who? The press and the public? Distributors? Developers? Part of Apple’s mystique lies in Steve’s rabbit-out-of-hat revelations, and you look a lot better when you deliver what you haven’t promised rather than when you fail to deliver what you have. I do wonder if some distributors (like those large nationwide mail order houses who keep sending us catalogues) ever get stuck with obsolete inventory on their hands. If there’s any problem with Apple’s secrecy, it concerns developers. We’ve had a couple of occasions on which Apple hasn’t given them an adequate heads-up and software developers have been caught short and had to scramble to catch up. When that happens, we the users suffer.

Can’t preannounce new Macs in the pipeline – sales of existing models would dry up!

True, but Apple’s inventory management is just about the best in the business. So they know when it’s the right time to let us all in on a product upgrade. Of course, experienced Apple watchers will check the inventory situation, as much as they can, and when a model begins to become unavailable, they feel pretty sure that an upgrade is in the pipeline.
