The Apple Hardware Report: Some Things Don’t “Just Work”!

November 6th, 2008

It’s very easy to sell a Mac to the skeptic when things function normally, and to be frank, they usually do. Indeed, I’ve also done pretty well in making that occasional deal to sell my old hardware to a local buyer.

However, on a rare occasion things don’t always work predictably. Some years back, for example, I was in the midst of ridding myself of a Power Mac G4. The prospective purchaser was just about ready to take the cash out of his wallet when I began a final backup of some remaining files.

Unfortunately the deal was almost aborted, as it appeared that the external drive failed at that very moment. Newsletter #402 Preview: I Go to Visit the Apple Store

August 12th, 2007

So a client, a semi-retired jazz concert producer, called me the other day and asked me to set up a wireless router for him. I thought for a moment about the $60 variety available at many consumer electronics outlets, but then decided that this wasn’t such a good idea.

I won’t mention the names of those companies. Instead, I decided to spend an extra $120 or so of my client’s money — with his full knowledge and consent — and chose the Apple AirPort Extreme base station instead.

That afternoon, I drove down to the Apple Store at the Biltmore, an upscale shopping center a short drive from the center of Phoenix, prepared for a quick shopping tour and a fast return home to set the device up before visiting the client’s home office the following morning.

Newsletter #382 Preview: Half an AirPort Extreme Review

March 25th, 2007

Most of you have read the first full-fledged reports of the 802.11n variant of Apple’s AirPort Extreme. I just got one a few days ago, and I’d love to give you some performance ratings, except for the fact that I do not as yet have a Mac with 802.11n hardware. That will happen soon, but I think I have enough to say about Apple’s new base station to write an interim report.

The preliminaries are fairly simple: Apple has ditched the saucer-shaped motif in favor of something simpler and elegant. At first glance, the squared-off AirPort Extreme strikes you as half a Mac mini, similar to the Apple TV. Compared to the ugly and sometimes grotesque aspect of most routers, Apple’s base station stands out.
