Can You Trust an Upgrade?

December 22nd, 2009

On Monday afternoon, Apple released a fixer-upper to address screen distortion and flickering problems with some 27-inch iMacs. So far, the response has been mixed. Some who had the problem report that the symptoms are gone, while others still report them. I never had the problem, but ran the update anyway without any adverse impact.

In its release notes, Apple also suggests: “If your screen remains black after applying the updater or if you continue to experience image corruption or display flickering after successfully completing this update, contact AppleCare or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.”

This makes it clear that they don’t expect the firmware update to address all of the problems, but it’ll be up to the repair centers to deal with the rest. It may require replacing your iMac’s flat panel display or the entire computer, and that’s up to your dealer. I suppose if you just bought your iMac, getting another will be easier, particularly if you bought it direct from Apple, but a fix is a fix.

Newsletter #480 Preview: Are Leopard Bugs a Thing of the Past at Long Last?

February 8th, 2009

As regular readers know, I’m not one to take Mac troubleshooting sites as seriously as I used to. In one tragic case, one of those sources, which has had a couple of ownership changes, has managed to pretty much lose its hard-won reputation for accuracy.

These days, if they’re not just taking a few random system anomalies and turning them into serious problems of one sort or another, they are mostly regurgitating the material they find at Apple’s own support forums. Unfortunately, those forums are not actually vetted, but just offered as a reasonably open resource for folks to report problems and sometimes even get some answers by regular visitors. Apple doesn’t really make an effort to provide genuine support, though. They mostly provide that service as a place to vent and perhaps locate others who’ve solved the problem you’re having.

Newsletter #457 Preview: No, Apple Isn’t Going Downhill

August 31st, 2008

I still remember, nearly 20 years ago, setting up a brand new Macintosh system in my home. Up till then, I did most of my work at the office, but I had seen the future, more or less, and telecommuting was going to be a large part of it, so I had to be prepared.

Now I had used Macs at the office almost from day one, as soon as they become practical solutions for getting real work done. But I was also losing assignments, because I couldn’t complete them after the workday ended.

In any case, not 15 minutes after opening QuarkXPress to edit a document, I got a system error prompt. If you remember the days of System 6, there would even be a Restart button in the dialog, but it would rarely do anything, and that was the case this time. So I forced a restart, and got back to work.

iPhone 2.0: Direct From New Zealand!

July 10th, 2008

First of all, The Night Owl will never write a story about beta software that isn’t supposed to be distributed to the public. I won’t report on something acquired illegally either, because I don’t do that sort of thing. However, it is also true that the iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 software were both released around the world on a staggered rollout schedule, depending on your local time. So, for example, residents of, say, New Zealand, got theirs the day before customers in the U.S.A.

Of course, once the firmware update became available, you were readily able to locate a number of direct links, so you didn’t have to wait for it to arrive in your city. It’s all been well publicized, and I won’t tell you specifically where you might find your copy, as it’ll be available in your country by the time most of you read this article.
