Apple and the World of Paranoia

August 17th, 2009

There’s lots of mileage in creating a climate of fear, as any dictator can tell you. Indeed, even in a supposedly free country, you will find opposing politicians presenting their point of view not with logic and reason, but supposedly to protect you from the dastardly deeds of the opposition.

I won’t get into that silliness about the so-called “death boards” that will supposedly let the government euthanize the older people in your family, so you don’t have to continue to spend money to keep them healthy. That, of course, represents one political party essentially accusing the other of attempted murder, and it was always based on a complete lie.

Of course, in the tech world, Apple has cleverly used its Mac versus PC ads as a way to make you fear Microsoft, as if that’s anything that is difficult to do. The PC, depicted as an always-befuddled nerd, is perennially overcome by Windows-borne difficulties, such as ongoing threats of virus, constant crashes, and the sheer difficulty in getting anything done.

So Apple Isn’t Looking Very Beleaguered!

April 22nd, 2009

Consider what some so-called tech pundits and industry analysts said in the long (some say endless) run up to Apple’s quarterly report. Mac sales are down and Apple has a problem. They’ve got to cut prices and rush out a netbook to save the business.

Perhaps the best comment I read about Apple’s quarterly financials, released Wednesday afternoon, came in an email in which a friend forwarded a link to their press release on the subject and said: “I dunno…Apple isn’t looking very beleaguered to me. :-)

Indeed, Apple reported its best non-holiday quarter in the company’s history, with total sales of $8.16 billion, compared to analyst estimates of $7.96 billion. Net income increased to $1.21 billion, or $1.33 per share, compared to $1.05 billion, or $1.16 per share. To be blunt, as we previously predicted, Apple beat the street yet again.

Overall, some 2.2 million Macs were sold during the March quarter, representing a three percent decrease compared to last year. However, the desktop refresh in early March has apparently helped, because sales did improve markedly after that product introduction. In all, Apple regards actual sell through, which means units shipped to customers, as “relatively flat” year over year.

About the Recent Steve Jobs Reports

April 14th, 2009

So out of the blue, the Wall Street Journal reports that Steve Jobs continues to work closely with Apple on new products, while he recovers from the illness that forced him to take an extended leave of absence. This does little more than confirm what Jobs said months ago when he went on his hiatus. In response, Apple’s stock price continues its generally upward trend, with only a few dips along the way.

Now officially Apple isn’t saying anything new, but you just know that stories that appear in such a prestigious newspaper must (or should) have some degree of substance. WSJ attributes the report to “people familiar with the matter,” without naming their sources.

But the phrase pretty much confirms where it came from, and that’s direct from Apple, but since the information was provided on background, it cannot be attributed to any particular individual. More to the point, it’s clear to me that the WSJ reporters weren’t just lucky. Apple sought them out to get this information published without having to go on record, knowing full well that it would still be accepted as authentic and quoted around the world.

Was the Steve Jobs Health Admission Too Little Too Late?

January 5th, 2009

So, after months of sometimes morbid speculation, the story about the condition of Steve Jobs has finally been revealed in a brief statement posted at Apple’s site. The key and optimistic paragraph states: “Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been ‘robbing’ me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.” And Jobs expects to regain all that lost weight by spring.

Fair enough. Hormone problems can cause all sorts of nasty things. No doubt the talking heads on the 24-hour cable TV networks will bring on their standard roster of physician-commentators to discuss the possible conditions from which Jobs probably suffers. Obviously they are making “educated guesses,” since they have no way of accessing the actual medical records. Or perhaps they are just talking through their hats, since they will no doubt be asked to discuss the worst-case scenarios.
